I wrote this after remembering a breakup from a very toxic relationship I found myself in quite a few years ago… I brought in the 808s, keeping it simple, inspired by the power of a simple 808 that I’d seen the Queen Erykah Badu employ live at her shows. I wanted that old school g funk, low rider feel whilst being still trippy like you’ve just stumbled out the dentist and then Alex Cosmo Blake came through with some genius licks on guitar to smooth it out. This one felt Smokey, I saw the image of me being literally rolled up in a spliff and smoked by this beautiful girl, which at first felt amazing, but as the ember burns further and further down, it starts to hurt more and more until it’s agony. I know my g Lex Amor would be perfect on this with her silky delivery and she’d get the double meaning behind this. Maybe me and Lex are talking about a toxic relationship in the past respectively but then again maybe we’re talking about the toxic relationship us humans have with our Ego? The metaphor is that humans are so focused on our ego and our own shallow selfish lifestyles, that we’re not even noticing the world is literally burning outside the window. We feed our ego’s with a lifestyle that’s destroying the planet. At the end you can hear a recording of the forest fires that come in the next song.
